Illinois LCV Names Environmentalist of the Year
Updated 6/2: Wilmette resident wins environmentalist award
Elizabeth Bankoff got involved in climate issues with the League of Women Voters more than two years ago, when global warming was well-accepted by scientists but only vaguely understood by most others.
The Wilmette resident's work in helping thousands of North Shore area residents grasp the problem and possible solutions has led to her recognition as Environmentalist of the Year by the Illinois League of Conservation Voters.
The organization, which works to elect candidates on environmental platforms, presented the award to Bankoff last week in recognition of her work in organizing Our Climate Matters, a four-day symposium held last October.
"She incorporated so many people on a grass-roots level and had a great turnout and has used that momentum to keep folks engaged on this issue and this directly relates to our mission," said Joe Woodward, executive director.
