Title:   Staff Attorney                                                                       Status:  Exempt                                                                       Reports To: General Counsel & Senior Vice President

 

General Description: 

The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) and LCV Education Fund work to turn environmental values into national priorities. The Staff Attorney will be responsible for providing legal counsel and guidance of multiple tax-exempt organizations, including a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit corporation, and related political organizations of the 501(c)(4). This position provides legal oversight on a variety of issues involving the organization’s structure, regulatory compliance, governance, and contractual arrangements.    

 

Specific (Essential) Responsibilities:

  • Direct state election law compliance efforts, and works with Finance, Campaigns and Development Divisions, as well as outside counsel and compliance vendor;
  • Coordinate interdepartmental FEC compliance team and compliance vendor with responsibility for FEC filings;
  • Support General Counsel and Finance Division with federal and state tax compliance;
  • Review grant agreements, reports and proposals;
  • Monitor activities that relate to state leagues and provides guidance on joint activities;
  • Prepare and examine contracts involving leases, consultants, vendors, purchases, event venues, sales, insurance, etc.; prepares resolutions, forms, and contract addendums;
  • Assist with federal and state communications law research;
  • Conduct legal research and prepares memos and other communications for General Counsel and other divisions;
  • Work with Campaigns, Policy & Lobbying and Communications Divisions on research related to advocacy activities;
  • Draft correspondence to regulatory agencies including IRS and FEC
  • Aid General Counsel in corporate and governance oversight;
  • Help create and implement organization-wide procedures and conduct training of staff;
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Supervision: Law clerk(s)

 

Requirements:

  • Education:  JD degree from an accredited law school; bar membership (or pending admission) required.
  • Work experience:  1-3 years of experience in law, including non-profit experience and knowledge of tax and campaign finance laws.  Previous work with FEC regulations required; experience working with state election laws a plus. 
  • Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to build relationships with all staff levels. Proficient computer skills and research abilities using the Internet. Specific technical skills are required in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.  Ability to work under pressure with multiple deadlines. 
  • Capabilities:  Demonstrates expertise in a variety of legal field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Demonstrated relationship building skills; solid judgment; critical thinking skills; a sense of teamwork and community; ability to handle multiple tasks; highly organized.
  • Conditions:  Able to work hours in excess of stated office hours to get the job done; ability to travel occasionally.
