THE CALIFORNIA LEAGUE OF CONSERVATION VOTERS EDUCATION FUND
The CLCV Education Fund’s mission is to protect California's natural resources and improve the health of our communities. CLCVEF achieves this by educating voters, promoting civic engagement, and building strategic alliances. The CLCV Education Fund provides tools to environmental advocates on how to be a more effective force in environmental policy making and works to build statewide partnerships to expand public awareness of the key environmental issues impacting California.
- CLCV Ed Fund is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization that conducts a variety of voter education, opinion research, analysis of voter attitudes, investigation of strategies to increase the accountability of public officials, and other programs that support and enhance the work of its 501 (c) (4) partner the California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV), the oldest and largest state environmental voter league in the United States.
- CLCV has thousands of members throughout the state and maintains California and Federal PACs. CLCV’s mission is to protect the environmental quality of the state by increasing public awareness of the environmental performance of all elected officials, working to elect environmentally responsible candidates, and holding them accountable to the environmental agenda once elected.
- CLCV is headquartered in Oakland, with an office in Los Angeles and presence in Sacramento. The CLCV Education Fund is headquartered in the Los Angeles office (with staff in Los Angeles and Oakland).
- CLCV Ed Fund has recently updated a strategic plan for 2010-2013. The current plan contains the following three organizational goals:
- Capacity Building: Maintain a robust and healthy environmental community that works collaboratively.
- Civic Engagement: Expand the geographic and demographic bases, including untapped constituencies, of Californians participating in the political process on behalf of environmental issues.
- Organizational Sustainability: Sustain and grow a healthy environmental organization.

OVERVIEW OF ORGANIZATIONAL CHALLENGES
The CLCV Ed Fund has yet to realize its full potential. The organization has a strong history and solid reputation in the investigation of voter attitudes toward environmental issues and as a proponent of greater understanding of environmental justice issues. However, to increase its effectiveness, it needs to do more research into the environmental attitudes and motivations of California voters, and invest more resources to engage voters on environmental issues and to enhance the strategic mission of the CLCV. In addition, the CLCV Ed Fund must work with the entire environmental community to develop a proactive, common agenda and unified message on the key environmental challenges facing the state. Some of the challenges ahead include:
- Obtaining sufficient financial resources to meets its program goals
- Implementing the strategic plan and the Work Program for FY 2011, managing existing programs to educate voters on environmental issues (polling, research and outreach)
- Expanding the board and staff
- Improving fundraising and development results
- Facilitating productive Board-staff relationships with both CLCV Ed Fund and CLCV board members
- Building and strengthening the CLCV Ed Fund’s organizational infrastructure

THE POSITION
The EDUCATION FUND VICE PRESIDENT is charged with ensuring that the CLCV Ed Fund exercises its best efforts to meet its program goals and secures sufficient financial resources.
The Vice President is responsible for the management of the CLCV Ed Fund. Working with the CLCV program staff, he/she supervises the CLCV Ed Fund staff and oversees all of its program goals and activities. The Vice President manages, oversees and participates in all CLCV Ed Fund fundraising activities. He/she is the primary public face for the CLCV Ed Fund. The Vice President reports to the CEO of the California League of Conservation Voters with guidance and management support from the ED Fund Board of Directors.
Duties and responsibilities of the position include:

FUNDRAISING
- Work with Board and Staff to meet organizational fundraising goals.
- Working with the CLCV Major Donor director, raise significant amounts through major donor program for CLCV.
- Plan and execute annual and long-term fundraising plans.
- Maintain regular personal contact with major Ed Fund donors.

PROGRAM MANAGEMENT
- Work to ensure the completion of existing funded programs
- Work with board and staff to develop and implement an annual work program and budget.

MEDIA/COMMUNICATIONS
- Act as CLCV Ed Fund’s primary public spokesperson for the news media.
- Oversee communication planning and all communication materials.

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
- Oversee preparation of an annual budget and monitor income and expenditures on a monthly basis.
- Ensure that CLCV Ed Fund meets financial goals.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant government requirements.
- Execute contractual agreements with vendors, lessors, contractors, and others.

PERSONNEL
- Directly supervise the Ed Fund staff.
- Work closely with the CLCV management team.

GOVERNANCE
- Work with Board Members to obtain the best Board contributions to the CLCV Ed Fund.
- Ensure that CLCV Ed Fund board meetings are held on a regular basis and that complete records are maintained.

RELATIONSHIP WITH CLCV
- Work with the CEO of CLCV and the CLCV staff to ensure that all programs and fundraising are coordinated.

THE CANDIDATE

Education and Experience
The ideal candidate will have:
- A minimum of 6 years of senior-level management experience with staff, program and fundraising responsibilities
- A superior track record as a fundraiser
- Demonstrated management skills as a leader/manager
- A Bachelor’s degree in a related field

Knowledge and Skills
Ideally, candidates should have:
- Knowledge of California and Federal environmental issues.
- Knowledge of public outreach strategies and voter mobilization programs.
- Demonstrated management skills as a team leader.
- Familiarity with all facets of development and fundraising techniques.
- Excellent writing and analytical skills.
- Understanding of basic financial record-keeping for NPO’s.
- Knowledge of the legal and operational framework for a 501(c)(3)/501(c)(4)/PAC.
- Excellent public speaking skills.
- Supervisory skills and experience.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural environment.
- Bilingual.
